New PaTH supporting youth employment in Queensland

Senator for Western Australia

More young people have signed up to the Turnbull Government’s Youth Jobs PaTH program in Queensland than in any other state.

Businesses around Australia are successfully trialling and hiring young people. Queensland is leading the way with employers entering into more than 4,670 wage subsidy agreements under the ‘Hire’ element of the program.

Under the Turnbull Government, 2017 saw the best jobs growth on record, with 403,100 jobs created nationwide. The youth unemployment rate in Queensland has fallen by 1.2 percentage points to 12.1 per cent, with 42,500 more young Queenslanders in jobs than a year ago.

In 2017 more Australians entered the workforce than in any 12 month period in the last 40 years. But there is still more to be done to encourage more young Australians into work.

We are committed to getting as many young Australians into those jobs as possible and PaTH is giving young people the skills and experience they need to get into work.

The Turnbull Government believes the best form of welfare is a job and the PaTH program is helping thousands of young people to find and keep work. PaTH is giving thousands of young people a go through internships and helping them to get a job with targeted incentives for employers like Eckersley Group.

PaTH is making it simpler for businesses to hire young people, particularly small businesses, and we encourage organisations around Australia to get involved in the program. Under the PaTH program, businesses can receive $1000 to provide internships for eligible young people and up to $10,000 over six months if they hire a young job-seeker.

Since its introduction in January last year, the new Youth Bonus wage subsidy has driven the success of Youth Jobs PaTH, with over 16,000 agreements entered into. These positive results show young people, with the right support, are clearly willing to have a go and businesses are willing to give them a go.

PaTH is yet another policy the Turnbull Government has introduced to promote business growth, encourage investment and create jobs.
