Final NAPLAN results a reminder there is more work to do

The Hon Dan Tehan MP
Minister for Education

The Morrison Government will push forward with its plan to improve school results, focusing on quality teaching and the curriculum.

The 2019 NAPLAN National Report results published today confirm the preliminary results that were published in August last year.

Minister for Education Dan Tehan said the NAPLAN test provided students, parents, teachers and educators with valuable information about the performance of our students, schools and systems.

This year, the Federal Government will work with the states and territories to continue improving student outcomes by:

  • Fast tracking a review of the entire Australian Curriculum with an initial focus on maths and science.
  • Making the teaching of phonics and reading instruction mandatory for initial teacher education (ITE) courses and increasing the time allocated to literacy in ITE courses.
  • Establishing the national evidence institute that will provide evidence and best-practice for teachers to improve student outcomes.
  • Focussing on literacy and numeracy learning progressions.
  • Conducting a review to reduce red tape affecting teachers and school leaders.

"Our Government understands the importance of education and we want every Australian child, no matter where the live, to get a world-leading education," Mr Tehan said.

"Literacy and numeracy must be the absolute fundamentals of a world-leading education because, as the chief scientist says, if you don’t have the basic skills you will never expand your learning.

"We have made improving literacy and numeracy a focus of this Government. That is why we are introducing a free, Year One phonics check for all students to assess their language skills and why we are providing $9.5 million to strengthen the capacity of teachers to teach mathematics and numeracy.

"The Morrison Government continues to back NAPLAN because our community deserves to know how our students and schools are performing."
