Ensuring the safety of international students

The Hon Dan Tehan MP
Minister for Education

The Morrison Government condemns the targeting of international students by criminals.

International students are welcome in Australia and all students should be safe on campus and in the wider community.

Our Government wants to ensure all students who come to Australia are living in a safe, supportive environment.

Under the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 and the National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018, education providers must provide access to support services to ensure the mental and physical wellbeing of their international students.

Earlier this year, I instructed the Education Department to consult with the sector on the further development of strategies to address mental health issues among international students. This national consultation will now be expanded to also look at ways to better ensure the physical safety of students.

The Federal Government is working closely with state and territory governments and education providers to ensure Australia is a safe and welcoming country for international students.

Violence against international students is a high priority for all levels of government and law enforcement.

Australia is known around the world as a safe and secure study destination with 95 per cent of international students rating their personal safety and security as one of the reasons they have chosen to study in Australia.
