Negotiations between DP World and the Maritime Union

The Hon Bill Shorten MP
Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Financial Services and Superannuation

I welcome news of constructive progress in negotiations between DP World and the Maritime Union for a new enterprise agreement.

But the clear progress shows the system of current laws has been effective.

There are those who cry out for Government micro-management of every enterprise bargaining stoush.

But the Government was not convinced negotiations had been exhausted - that is why we didn't intervene here.

Bargaining is part of the industrial relations landscape and bargaining isn't easy. Parties to this dispute are mature and competent negotiators.

I believe the parties are prepared to sit down, negotiate and do the hard work needed to reach an agreement.
