The Minister for Employment Participation, Brendan O’Connor, today announced a major Indigenous tourism initiative that will create training and employment opportunities for 35 Indigenous job seekers in far north Queensland.
During a visit to Rainforrestation Nature Park in Kuranda today, Mr O’Connor announced Australian Government was providing $290,000 to the Cairns-based CaPTA Group, to provide full-time employment for 15 Indigenous jobseekers, as well as employment and training activities for 10 school-based trainees and five full-time Indigenous trainees.
Mr O’Connor said the project will also develop the skills and career opportunities for five of CaPTA’s existing Indigenous staff.
“Trainees will be trained at CaPTA’s recently opened Training Centre, established in partnership with the Career Training Institute of Australia, to provide nationally accredited hospitality and tourism training to Indigenous Australians,” Mr O’Connor said.
“As part of the project, participants will also receive tailored mentoring and support services throughout their training and employment.
The CaPTA Group will also extend its mentoring and support services to any participant who chooses to leave the project to make a successful transition to another employment or training pathway.”
The funding is being provided from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations’ Structured Training and Employment Program (STEP).
The CaPTA Group is a group of eight diverse companies and provides a broad range of employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians.
“Indigenous staff currently make up 10 per cent of the workforce at the CaPTA Group,” Mr O’Connor said.
The latest project will build on CaPTA’s Indigenous Employment Strategy which was developed with support from the Australian Government.
“CaPTA’s Indigenous Employment Strategy has been a success, with six of the 11 Indigenous trainees who were employed for the project continuing in full-time employment with the CaPTA Group.”
“Through projects such as this, the Australian Government is ensuring that Indigenous employment opportunities are initiated and supported at the local community level and is working towards closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous employment within a decade.”
