The Minister for Employment Participation, the Hon Brendan O’Connor MP has today committed to a review of the current administration of social security fraud and debt cases.
The Sydney Morning Herald today claimed the previous department of Employment and Workplace Relations was pursuing expensive litigation against welfare recipients for minor errors in social security payments.
Mr O’Connor said that in light of the claims made in the Sydney Morning Herald today, it was appropriate that the new department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) conduct a review of the administration of debt and fraud cases.
"The Rudd Government will not tolerate welfare fraud, but obviously there are circumstances where genuine mistakes are made" the Minister said.
"I am disturbed by some of the cases revealed in the Sydney Morning Herald today and have instructed my Department to review the way in which existing social security legislation including penalties, are administered."
