Completion of Work for the Dole project − Building the ACT
The Minister for Employment Participation, Brendan O'Connor, today congratulated the participants of the local Work for the Dole project, funded by the Australian Government, for all their hard work on the project, Building the ACT. The project was based at the Canberra Seniors Centre in Turner and has achieved positive outcomes for the Centre and local community.
The project was funded by $30 000 from the Australian Government and developed by Auswide Projects, a local Community Work Coordinator delivering the Work for the Dole program. The Canberra Seniors Centre has been painted both inside and out, with new cupboards being installed later this week for much needed storage.
"The project has given 19 local unemployed people valuable work experience and skills in painting and construction, skills which are in high demand in the local area," Minister O’Connor said.
"A major benefit of this project is that eight people have already gained employment, an excellent result for those concerned."
"The Rudd Government will ensure that employment programs focus on providing participants with skills which are in demand in the local community," he said.
"This gives participants a greater advantage in finding work in their local area, while also assisting local businesses to obtain employees with practical experience."
