Canberra student Young Historian of the Year
Canberra High School student Ineka Voigt has today been recognised as the 2015 Australian Young Historian of the Year for her project on Australian artist Nora Heysen.
Minister for Vocational Education and Skills, Luke Hartsuyker presented Ineka with $1000 and a plaque for the honour, while announcing the 24 category winners of the annual National History Challenge at Parliament House.
“The Government is helping to bring history to life for primary and secondary students with $365,000 over three years to support the challenge that is run by the History Teachers’ Association of Australia,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“This year’s winning entries explored the theme ‘Leadership and Legacy’ in a wide variety of historical contexts in both Australia and overseas.
“What is so valuable and relevant about the challenge is that students do their own historical research and present their conclusions in a variety of formats including essays, DVDs and museum displays.
“Entries covered a broad spectrum from family history, the Eureka Stockade, World War II, modern Singapore, the contribution of Indigenous leaders such as Lowitja O’Donoghue and Charles Perkins, political leaders including Robert Menzies and Herbert Vere Evatt.
“This rich diversity shows that history is well and truly alive in our classrooms,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
Mr Hartsuyker said the Department of Education and Training has been the main sponsor of the National History Challenge since 1998.
“The theme for the 2016 National History Challenge is ‘Triumph or Tragedy?’ and I look forward to some exceptional entries,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
