Key step in process for incorporating the Australian Building and Construction Commission into Fair Work Australia

Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Julia Gillard has today released the final terms of reference for consultations relating to the creation of the Specialist Division for the building and construction industry within the inspectorate of Fair Work Australia.

The terms of reference are http://www.workplace.gov.au/publications/policyreviews/ wilcoxconsultationprocess/termsofreference.htm

The Government has announced that the Australian Building and Construction Commission will be retained until 31 January 2010.

After that date, it will be replaced with a specialist building and construction division within the inspectorate of Fair Work Australia (‘the Specialist Division’).

Earlier this year, Minister Gillard announced that the Hon Murray Wilcox QC would undertake extensive consultations surrounding the creation of the Specialist Division for building and construction within Fair Work Australia.

The terms of reference were finalised following consultation with the building and construction industry.

Twenty-one submissions were received from various stakeholders including state and territory governments, unions, employer associations and companies.

The Honourable Murray Wilcox QC will fully and comprehensively consult and consider the matters outlined in the terms of reference before providing his report to the Government in 2009.

The Government will continue to consult with the community and stakeholders in the development of its new workplace relations laws and the structure and functions of Fair Work Australia.
