The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard has today releasedRewarding Quality Teaching, a new research report that will inform the development and implementation of new teacher pay arrangements.
There is nothing more important to learning that the quality of the teacher standing in front of the classroom. That’s why a key element of the Education Revolution is a $550 million package to support and promote quality teaching.
The research report investigates ways to maintain and improve the quality of the teaching workforce through recognition and reward.
Rewarding Quality Teaching was accepted by the Ministerial Council in June and will form the basis of the reform of teacher remuneration arrangements in each State and Territory.
New South Wales has recently announced that it will identify its best performing teachers and offer them increased pay to teach in schools serving the state’s most disadvantaged communities.
The research was originally commissioned by the previous Liberal government. Most significantly, the research found that there was no support among stakeholders for a reward system based solely on student results as proposed by the previous Liberal government.
The research found that any teacher reward system must be:
- sustainable and accessible;
- meaningful to teachers;
- based on clearly established and valid criteria; and
- evidence based.
The Rudd Government is investing in a number of initiatives to attract, train, place, develop and retain quality teachers in front of classrooms, which is fundamental to improving Australian schools.
The combination of greater transparency, a new national curriculum, a renewed focus on literacy and numeracy, investing in vital school infrastructure and quality teaching is delivering an education revolution to all our schools.
The Rudd Government's relentless pursuit of a world class education system for this nation's future is revolutionary.
