The Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, today announced that Australian school children will have a voice at the Australia 2020 Summit.
All Australian primary and secondary schools will be invited to host their own Schools Summits in the lead up to the Australia 2020 Summit in April.
The Schools Summits will offer a unique opportunity for students right around the country to make their views heard on the ten key themes of Australia 2020.
Today’s school students are the adults of 2020, and it’s vital that we harness their energy, ideas and vision in any discussion about this nation’s future.
They will be the parents, the business owners, the farmers, the educators and the leaders of 2020, and it’s crucial that we hear their views about the kind of Australia they want to live in.
The Schools Summits will be an excellent opportunity for young people from Bundaberg to Karratha, from Gove to Launceston to tell us what they think about the big issues facing the country.
The ideas, issues and questions raised through the Schools Summit will be taken forward to the Youth Summit announced last week, and from there to Australia 2020.
The Government encourages each and every school in Australia to be a part of this historic event.
The Rudd Government’s Australia 2020 summit provides a unique opportunity for all Australians, including students, to be involved in discussing our future.
From tomorrow, schools will be invited to register at http://www.australia2020.gov.au to host a Schools Summit. Schools can choose a convenient day and time to hold their summit at any time over a three week period beginning 17 March 2008.
Age-group appropriate conversation starters will be provided to participating schools to help guide their summit. Feedback from the Schools Summits will be collected and consolidated by the Australian Government, and will provide material for discussion at the Youth Summit.
