PaTH paving the way to work for young people

More than 20,000 young people have been supported to get the skills and work experience they need to find, and keep, a job through the Turnbull Government’s Youth Jobs PaTH (Prepare-Trial-Hire) program.

Minister for Jobs and Innovation, Michaelia Cash, joined local MP Steve Irons in Perth today to announce the milestone at the Aloft Hotel who have placed participants under PaTH. The Turnbull Government recognises that the best form of welfare is a job. Youth Jobs PaTH is an example of how we are implementing practical measures to help unemployed young people get the essential work experience they need to secure a job.

“I’m pleased to mark this occasion at the Aloft Hotel with General Manager, Stephen Morahan, who has been a staunch advocate of the PaTH program and who has employed four young people as a result,” Minister Cash said.

“We know that one of the biggest problems young people face is a lack of experience, which can make it difficult when trying to convince an employer of their suitability for a job.

“PaTH is providing young Australians with the work experience they need to build their skills and confidence. At the same time, an employer gets the opportunity to observe that young person at work and see if they are right for their business.”

Federal Member for Swan, Steve Irons MP, said Youth Jobs PaTH was helping ensure our young people are building the skills that will equip them to enter the workforce and make a life for themselves.

“The Government is committed to getting as many Australians into work as possible. PaTH interns are fast-tracking the skills they need to become work-ready,” Mr Irons said.

“This experience is making a real difference here in my local community. So far, 215 young people from Swan have secured a job thanks to PaTH,” Mr Irons said.

Youth Jobs PaTH includes three flexible elements: 

  • Prepare – Employment Skills Training courses help young people better understand what employers expect of them in the workplace and equip them with the skills, attitudes and behaviours required for them to be successful in a job.
  • Trial – local businesses are encouraged to take on a young person aged 17 to 24 in a voluntary internship for a period of 4 to 12 weeks. Businesses that take on an intern will receive a $1,000 payment, and young people who participate will receive an incentive payment of $200 per fortnight on top of their income support payment. 
  • Hire – a Youth Bonus wage subsidy of up to $10,000 (GST inclusive) has been available since 1 January 2017 to help hire more young people.
