Senator for Western Australia

Minister for Employment, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash  today announced a package of measures, including an Illawarra Employment Facilitator, to assist workers who will be made redundant at BlueScope Steel in Port Kembla, New South Wales.

The Government is providing a $670,000 adjustment package with the assistance specifically targeted to connect retrenched workers with a wide range of support services. Minister Cash said providing the funding in a timely manner will help workers get back in the workforce as quickly as possible.

“The significant number of job losses expected in the Illawarra region has led to the Government deciding to implement a comprehensive structural adjustment package to assist BlueScope Steel workers to make the transition into new employment,” Minister Cash said.

The Minister acknowledged that while it was disappointing that jobs would be lost, BlueScope and its workers deserved praise for successfully negotiating a way to keep the plant open and save as many as 5000 jobs.

“Workers who are retrenched as a result of the closure of BlueScope Steel in Port Kembla and who have received a letter of redundancy will have access to intensive employment assistance available through the Government’s $6.8 billion jobactive employment service,” Minister Cash said.

“The Government will also be appointing an Illawarra Employment Facilitator who will be a local, on the-ground resource to help job seekers re-connect with employment and training opportunities as quickly as possible.

“The Facilitator will work with local employers, community groups and all levels of government to assist retrenched workers in finding a job over the next 18 months.”

Job seekers will have access to a new Government resource - the “What’s Next” website - which provides a range of information and self-help resources to get retrenched workers on a pathway to new employment quickly.

Those who are seeking information about the support available to them can call the Employment Services Information Line on 13 62 68.
