NSW League Legends working to boost Indigenous jobs
The NSW Origin Legends are teaming up with the Federal Government to deliver two jobs markets for Indigenous communities in Mt Druitt and Bathurst.
Member for Fowler Chris Hayes, representing the Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development and Minister for Sport Mark Arbib, said it was fantastic that the NSW Origin Legends were continuing their support for Indigenous employment and the Learn. Earn. Legend! program.
“The Indigenous Jobs Markets are a great way of bringing together employers and jobseekers to open up job opportunities for yourself, your family and your community,” Mr Hayes said.
“The NSW Origin Legends efforts and dedication to building sustainable employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians are fantastic and I encourage other organisations to follow their example.
“The Learn. Earn. Legend! program aims to encourage Indigenous students to stay at school, get a good education and move into a job so they can be role models in their communities.”
Senator Arbib said the Indigenous Jobs Markets would bring together more than 80 organisations from across Mt Druitt on 5 September and another expo would be held in Bathurst on 30 September.
“I strongly encourage all Indigenous Australians in Mt Druitt, Bathurst and the surrounding areas to take part and put themselves on the path to economic independence and the dignity of work,” Senator Arbib said.
Treasury predicts that 500,000 jobs would be created over the next two years and it was critical that Indigenous Australians had the support and training they needed to take up employment.
“Indigenous employment is not a short term issue, over the next four years the Government has also committed almost $650 million to the Indigenous Employment Program,” Senator Arbib said.
“This is part of the Gillard Government’s target to create more than 100,000 jobs for Indigenous Australians by 2018.”
